Margaret Yong Tau Fu , Good Year Court 9

It has been years since I last patronised this famous yong tau fu restaurant called Margaret Yong Tau Fu located at the ground floor of the Court 9 apartments. I do remember that the yong tau fu there was superb!

Last evening, I dropped by Margaret again as I was in the vicinity. There was ample parking and I managed to get the lot right in front of the shop. Business was good and most of the tables were already taken up at half past six. As in previous years, many of the customers were there with their family.

A look at the menu tells me that prices have increased. Each piece of yong tau fu costs RM1.30 ….hefty price tag…..but the taste was still the same i.e excellent. Both the savoury and sweet dips were good.

I also had the pork trotters in vinegar (RM15)  -it was aromatic and very appetising so much so that I had to order an extra bowl of rice.

The same can be said of the asam fish ….very appealing but the price was rather steep at RM20 per fish.

Vegetables (RM7) – I ordered baby yau mak…but to me, this one certainly looked gigantic! Anyway, for RM7 I would say it was a generous serving.

Overall, the standard of food has been maintained and I definitely had a great time dining here although this place has no airconditioning.

Kedai Yong Tau Foo Kwong Kee, Paramount, PJ

On a not so hot afternoon I ended up in Taman Paramount PJ looking for some good yong taufu as I have been told that Kwong Kee serves one of the best yong tau fus in PJ.

It’s fairly easy to locate this place – right opposite the old cinema (now occupied by Giant) and next to Hong Leong Bank. The place has no air conditioning and can get rather hot.

I ordered a glass of soya bean (RM1.50)– said to be homemade, I really loved this drink as it did not have that pretentious, artificial flavouring. It was so rich with soya goodness that I ordered a second glass…shhhh!

Fried mee hoon (RM2.50) – simple yet delicious. It doesn’t have much ingredients in it – just some shredded cabbages and bean sprouts, but it tasted really good. I believe they must have used their soup base when frying this noodles as I hardly felt any thirst after eating this.

Porridge (RM4.50) – I don’t really fancy porridge, but this one was certainly top notch – filled with lots of peanuts, Chinese mushroom and dried oysters –a must try here!

Here are the various yong tau fu I had –okra, tofu, fishball, fried fishball. All were alright except for the boiled fishballs which were slightly tough – too much flour. I noticed that their entire fridge was filled with bitter gourd and various uncooked vegetables waiting to be filled with fish paste and served to customers – that in itself is testimony to the quality of food here.

For the record each piece of yong taufu is priced at RM1.20

Ah Heng Yong Tau Fu, SS19 Subang

There’s a new yong taufu shop in town! Recently opened on 23 September 2012, I braved the after office hours jam and arrived at 7pm.

Ah Heng yong taufu is located at the exact shop lot as Wooka yong taufu which I reviewed some time back. One look and I  can say nothing much has changed in terms of appearance – the tables, chairs, ambience, etc …and as I entered I couldn’t help but wonder whether these are the same people behind Wooka.
Sweet sauce  and chilli sauce

We ordered 2 drinks – one is soya plus cincau (which is known as Michael Jackson in many other places) and the other is simply called R&S. Surprise, surprise! The soya cincau came with gula melaka (palm sugar). One sip and I could tell I would struggle to finish up this RM2.80 drink.

R&S (RM4.50) was simply a fizzy drink…..my guess would be Ribena & soda…but I never did find out. It had some longan in it. Far too sweet!

This is the spare ribs curry (RM12)  – the colour did put me off…and when I tried it, it was certainly did not live up to my expectation of curry as it was not hot, but rather sweet.

Fish cake (RM5) – despite all my grouses about the food here, I must say they serve pretty good deep fried fish cake. With a clean-mild fish taste and firm texture, eating it was a delight.

Choy sum (RM8) – the vegetables were slightly tough and I did not like the fact that some vegetables were not cut . This dish was  slightly oily for me too.

Yong taufu – each piece costs RM1.20 and I would sum it all up as ‘nothing to shout about’

Restoran Wooka Yong Tao Foo, SS19 Subang

It’s close to 7pm as I walked in and only one other table is occupied.

My dinner partner said ‘Is that an indication of the quality of food served here?’.

‘Let’s not make any assumptions, give it a try, and we’ll find out’, I replied.

So we looked at the menu – many items were crossed out..sigh!  Wanted so much to have assam fish but was told it wasn’t available. So we settled for these:-

Chee Cheong Fun – I was surprised to see it served this way –all chopped up and filled with gravy. Well, maybe it was my expectation that left me a little upset. I prefer the uncut version with just a little gravy.

Ladies fingers, brinjal and fried tofu – no complaints here. Taste wise- normal.

Foochow fish ball and normal fish ball in soup. Foochow fishball is normally stuffed with minced pork. Since Wooka is pork-free their version was stuffed with minced chicken. Frankly, I prefer the former. FYI, all the yong taufu here are selling at RM1.20 per piece which is slightly steep.

Fried wanton comes in minimum order of 6 pieces . Presentation wise – slightly boring as there was no greens on the plate.

Oat fish cake – I took a piece and really couldn’t figure out what I was eating. I had to douse this in chilli in order to make it palatable. FYI, this dish plus the 6 pieces of wanton cost RM10.50

The fried yau mak (RM7) was garnished with lots of fried onion. I found it a tad oily for my liking.

By the way, the sauce, which to me I a very crucial part of any yong taufu meal just didn’t work for me. The sweet sauce was ok but the spicy one wasn’t up to mark. What made it worse was these 2 sauces just couldn’t blend in terms of taste.
At the end of the meal, I was close to RM50 poorer and I think you can easily tell whether I’ll frequent this place again!

Ampang Homeland Yong Tau Foo, Taipan USJ

It’s been ages since I set foot in one this popular chain called Ampang Homeland Yong Tau Foo which boasts of several branches namely in Kampung Ampang Baru (yes, where else, right?), USJ, SS2 and even in Klang.

Sugar cane & wheat grass

Sauces for dipping the stuffed ingredients
The USJ outlet is located in the Taipan business centre and has no air conditioning. Having said that, the place is not oven hot as they have huge fans to cool the place down.

The yong tau foo costs RM1 per piece. We ordered ladies fingers, white tau foo, bitter gourd as well as dumplings and fish balls.   We also sampled the fried foo chok. We were given a choice of whether to have them dry or in soup. We asked for the stuffed items  and soup to be served separately except for the fishballs and dumplings, and the waiter willingly obliged.

The dumpling soup was alright but the fish ball soup had too much pepper in it.
Dumplings in soup - minimum order - 5 pieces

Fish balls in soup

This is the pandan chicken wing . For the record, each piece costs a whopping RM2.50…. When the chicken wings arrived, I could not help but to take a few smells before sinking my teeth into them. Each piece was flavourfully marinated and I loved it.

Lettuce in oyster sauce (RM7). The serving is of course very generous, but I would have prefer the lettuce cut into smaller pieces for easy eating.

Asam fish (RM5) –this had always been the specialty here. Once again it lived up to my expectation. Piping hot chillies with onions always give a perfect blend of ‘sourish sweet’ taste.
