川 人百味, PJS 8 Sunway

It's such a wonderful feeling to be back here once again. The air conditioning was quite a stark difference from the sweltering heat outside. As we sat down, we immediately ordered our drinks:-

This is stir fried celery with garlic, prawns, cashew nuts and carrots (RM32). I love the fragrant and crunchy cashew nuts which added some extra flavour to the dish.

This huge pot of soup (RM26)  is made using a variety of mushrooms. I love the outcome of it – tasty and nutritious.

Dan dan noodles (RM6) – smooth slippery noodles that one can easily slurp!

Prawns in batter fried with corn and peas (RM28) – I found this dish rather unique and the freshness of the prawns can be felt in every bite. The tastes of the corn and peas surprisingly compliment that of the prawns very well.

Stir fried lettuce (RM10) – this looked more like cabbage to me! Frankly, this dish was a tad oily for me.

Grilled squid (RM28) – I love the super duper spicy sauce which went well with the freshly grilled squid. The portion was so huge that we had to doggy bag some of it home.

Chinese Traditional Food Cuisine

Bandar Sunway has always been a food haven for authentic Chinese cuisine. This time I went to this restaurant called Chinese Traditional food Cuisine. The marble tables and chairs add a touch of class to this spotless restaurant. Inside the cool air conditioning is certainly a welcome from the sweltering heat outside.

I chose a table for 5 near the entrance where I got a nice view of the road outside and also got a glimpse of the on-goings inside this restaurant. The lady who took our orders spoke Cantonese and Mandarin with a heavy Chinese accent.

Cucumber salad (RM6)  - with  a rather unique blend of sourness and sweetness plus some spiciness from the chillies, this dish was very appetising and it certainly lived up to my expectation of a good appetiser.

This is ishinabe fish (RM38) . We requested that this dish be made non-spicy. What we got was a delicious pot of soup which had that pungent ginger taste. The soup was very tasty but my only complaint was that the fish had lots of tiny bones. In case you are wondering what ishinabe is, it is a stone pot. Food cooked in such a pot is said to do wonders for our health.

Beef with wild chillies (RM26) – you don’t see much chillies left as  someone had diligently removed them as soon as the dish arrived.  What looks like asparagus in the photo below is actually a specially imported vegetable from China. I never did find out the name, though. Well, this dish was indeed my favourite as the thinly sliced beef was tender and delicious.

Sweet and sour pork ribs (RM25) – garnished with some sesame on top, the fragrant smell of this dish made me really hungry that I ordered an extra bowl of rice just to polish off whatever little gravy there was. It was really superb!

This is called pickled frogs (RM30) – hot and spicy, I love the tender meat.

Stir fried kai lan (RM12) – slightly oily for my liking, but palatable anyhow.

川宮館 Restoran Chuan Gong Guan

Chuan  Gong Guan occupies a corner shop lot and is  easily visible when you drive along Jalan Beserah in Kuantan. I was drawn to this place as I was told that it serves the best Sze Chuan food in Kuantan.

We arrive at  7 pm and all tables except for one was occupied. The tables were made of marbles and everyone sat on round marble stools.

We ordered  7 dishes and asked for them to be of the tiniest portion as we wanted to try as many dishes as we could, yet not put anything to waste.

五香牛肉 (RM15) – five spice beef. This is a dry dish. Each piece of beef was tender and flavourful. I love the fact that every piece was well seasoned.

松仁玉米 (RM 15) Pine nut kernel with corn. I’ve always labelled this dish as a kiddie meal, but since pine nut kernel contains lots of mono unsaturated fatty acids (helps to reduce cholesterol), I just had to order this dish when I browsed through the menu.

(RM18) mouth watering chicken – chicken with spicy sauce. The red hot sauce really invigorated my senses and I just couldn’t bear to see the gravy go to waste. So I ordered an extra bowl of rice to polish up the gravy.

(RM22) – literally translated as braised white is a dish of braised pork with some mui choy at the bottom. If you are thinking of the local version of this dish then you will be pleasantly surprised as this dish is filled with lots of dried chillies at the bottom. That’s what I call adding some spice into our food, literally!

菊花 (RM33) chrysanthemum fish – with such an exotic name, it’s no wonder that this dish was a feast for the eyes. The fish is deboned and cut into strips and then folded in such a way that each piece resembles a flower. This is a sweet sauce dish and was very appetising.

蒜茸 (RM8) – stirred fried choy sam with garlic.

四季豆 (RM8) – fried French beans. The French beans were initially deep fried and then cooked with some dried chillies.

川 人百味, PJS 8 Sunway

I know that Bandar Sunway has many Chinese restaurants and when I say Chinese I mean mainland China. And this one was no exception – it serves Sze Chuan food. Of course the daring and adventurous me had to give it a try.

Well, as with many other shops of the same ‘species’ this one has no roman name…hmmm…my translation of this would be ‘simple plain people with a 100 tastes’. In other words, expect a variety of dishes. And yes, it didn’t disappoint as far as variety was concerned……but read on to know whether the food was tasty.

The place is air conditioned and the tables and chairs are as  clean as a whistle. Even the bowls and tea cups have been sterilised.

Drinks are either Chinese tea or bottled /can drnks. You have a choice of jasmine tea (picture below), 100 plus, wong lo kat, etc.

This is deep fried long beans (RM14). We requested for it to be fried without dried chillies and the outcome was perfect. From where we were seated we could hear the loud noise coming from the heated wok…and that to me is always an indication that the food was going to be superb.

Frogs with ginger and spring onion (RM26). The meat was not only tender, but sweet too. This dish was definitely a hit with my son…shhh! Of course I didn’t tell him what it was when he asked me. I just said ‘tender meat’!

This is called dan dan noodles (RM8). The noodles had a smooth, silky texture and eating it was easy as the noodles just glided down my throat.

Fried rice  (RM14) with squid, carrots, corn, peas and of course some roe as garnishing. I was rather surprised by the serving size…imagine a huge 6” bowl of rice..thats what we got!

This is simply called Sweet Vinegar Spare Ribs (RM22)….and yes, true to its name this dish was sweet, but not too sugary sweet as this was slightly  balanced by the taste of the large amount of tomatoes used.

Golden silver bun (RM12)  – a nice name for man tou! And the fluffy buns were good too!

At the end of  my pleasant meal I couldn’t help but buy some sui kow back for my tea time. There are many varieties but the meat used are beef and chicken.
