Grand Imperial USJ 19

Walking into Grand Imperial in USJ19 Mall was like walking into a nice ballroom.

I love the ambience and the buzz inside, which was a great contrast compared to the mall itself.

I had dim sum for brunch:-

Watermelon & orange juice

Honey dew juice

Home made pancakes

The kids have gone berserk after staying at home for a few days during this school holidays. To occupy their time, we decided to ask them to make pancakes for breakfast.

This is the end product – nicely rolled up pancakes. We use steel chopsticks as they are washable and reusable, unlike satay sticks which need to be disposed after use.

We used the recipe from:-

Ingredients:-
  • 100g plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 300ml semi-skimmed milk
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil or vegetable, plus extra for frying
  • pinch salt
  1. Blending in the flour: Put the flour and a pinch of salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Crack the eggs into the middle, then pour in about 50ml milk and 1 tbsp oil. Start whisking from the centre, gradually drawing the flour into the eggs, milk and oil. Once all the flour is incorporated, beat until you have a smooth, thick paste. Add a little more milk if it is too stiff to beat.

  1. Finishing the batter: Add a good splash of milk and whisk to loosen the thick batter. While still whisking, pour in a steady stream of the remaining milk. Continue pouring and whisking until you have a batter that is the consistency of slightly thick single cream. Traditionally, people would say to now leave the batter for 30 mins, to allow the starch in the flour to swell, but there’s no need.

  1. Getting the right thickness: Heat the pan over a moderate heat, then wipe it with oiled kitchen paper. Ladle some batter into the pan, tilting the pan to move the mixture around for a thin and even layer. Quickly pour any excess batter into a jug, return the pan to the heat, then leave to cook, undisturbed, for about 30 secs. Pour the excess batter from the jug back into the mixing bowl. If the pan is the right temperature, the pancake should turn golden underneath after about 30 secs and will be ready to turn.

  1. Flipping pancakes: Hold the pan handle, ease a fish slice under the pancake, then quickly lift and flip it over. Make sure the pancake is lying flat against base of the pan with no folds, then cook for another 30 secs before turning out onto a warm plate. Continue with the rest of the batter, serving them as you cook or stack onto a plate. You can freeze the pancakes for 1 month, wrapped in cling film or make them up to a day ahead.

Mandy’s Summit USJ

Mandy’s would best be described as a simple, no frills eatery which serves pretty decent food at very reasonable prices. And it is for these reasons that patrons keep coming back..and oh, did I mention about the decorations that adorn the walls – business cards, records and bags and luggage from of old…these are what your eyes can feast on if you come to Mandy’s.

I’ve been to Mandy’s numerous times and I can order food without looking at the menu. The concept here is simple –order your food & pay at the cashier’s, then choose your table and enjoy your meal.

We ordered nasi lemak (RM8.95) – this is served with an interesting array of condiments – peanuts, anchovies, a fried egg, some long beans, sambal, sliced cucumbers and a generous serving of chicken curry. This is my all time favourite dish at Mandy’s.

Teriyaki chicken (RM5.99) – this was a promotional item  for the day.

Footlong sausage (RM17.50) – 2 long sausages served with fries and a dollop of coleslaw- the sausages were amazingly tasty!

Spaghetti with beef balls - (RM13.80) – just look at the angel hair pasta- long and fine – always a favourite with kids.

For the record, milk shakes are sold at RM5.80, whilst the super yummy avocado drinks go for RM6.50.

If you have the chance, try the bubur cha cha (RM3.50) –it won’t disappoint.

Breakfast at Remember Come, Kuantan

This morning, I had breakfast  with some friends at this coffee shop with a rather weird name –Remember Come…well, I guess the owner meant to say that we should always remember this shop and go there often.

This is nasi lemak with some peanuts, anchovies, cucumber slices and half a boiled egg. Priced at RM2.50, I must say it is rather expensive. This was served on wax paper and the gravy was separately put in a saucer with just one piece of potato (picture below).

Chicken rice (RM4.50) – tasted alright.

Curry noodles – the gravy was bursting with coconut milk flavour and I really loved it.

Here are the drinks we had..and I highly recommend the teh peng here.

Noodles @ Tanjung Malim

Another  leisurely day and we decided to take a drive to nowhere –and guess what? We ended up in another town in a different state altogether!  Our short drive brought us to Tanjung Malim!

As it was time for breakfast we decided to go breakfast ‘hunting’ and ended up at Lorong Kancil 1. We saw 2 houses selling noodles and decided to try number 92. It was a corner, single storey house.

These lanterns must be hanging here all year round!

We had a bowl of curry noodles and dried noodles and a lo han kuo drink each. The curry was thick and delicious..so much so that not a drop was left! The dried noodles with a some soya sauce did not look appetising…but….the taste was simply awesome! It must be one of the best home-made noodles I have ever eaten. Springy noodles cooked to perfection – I just can’t find the correct words to describe it….you’ve got to try it to know what I’m raving about.

The bill came as a shock to me as the entire meal costs us less than RM8!

Dome Café , Bangsar Shopping Centre

Dome Café is an outlet you would not miss if you walk in from the main entrance of Bangsar Shopping Complex, more famously known as BSC. It occupies a prominent lot, and is virtually impossible to miss.

I had RM150 voucher thanks to last year’s Mega Sale Carnival and so got 2 buddies to come along for a makan-makan gathering. It was a hot sunny noon and so we decided to forego the Alfresco dining area  -opted to sit inside where there was air-conditioning.

We ordered our drinks – vanilla shake (RM13.50 each) and lemonade berry (RM11.50). I must say that the vanilla shake was excellent, truly on par with the ones I had in London, and I really loved it.

Wild mushroom soup (RM16) – slightly pricey, but then one sip will tell you that the premium paid is justified.

Spicy olio spaghetti (RM23) – it tasted alright but would have been better with more garlic.

Pizza-classic Roman (RM26) –this is said to be made of Dome’s special pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese and covered with chicken pastrami and button mushrooms. I like the visual presentation of this pizza very much. I did have a slice and I can say it fits what many like – you know the kind of pizza that makes a stretchy ‘mess’ when you pull the pizza towards yourself.

Big breakfast –beef rasher (RM27) - With toast, 2 eggs, raosted tomatoes, hash brown and some ‘bacon’ , this was, well, as the name suggested BIG enough to feed a big eater like me!

I love the food here and I’ll be back soon.

Restoran Zaman, Kuantan

Proclaimed as the best nasi lemak in Kuantan, Zaman’s nasi lemak was definitely something I had to try when I drove past this restaurant early this morning.

The common queue for nasi lemak and nasi dagang was long. I took a packet of the fragrant prepacked nasi lemak (RM2) and waited for my turn to pay. Every second was a torture as the fragrance of the nasi lemak caused my already hungry tummy to rumble and growl even more.

After paying, I quickly went on to the most important part – EAT!! The rice not only smelt good due to the fact that it was wrapped in fresh banana leaf, it tasted excellent too. Every spoonful of nasi lemak with the anchovies sambal was heavenly as each grain of rice was sufficiently coated in coconut milk. I must also mention that the sambal had the right amount of spiciness, by my standards, that is!

Kedai Kopi dan Roti Sun Yuen Cheong 新源昌茶室, Raub

Famed for its home-made bread either toasted or steamed with some kaya and butter, this coffee shop along Jalan Tun Razak n Raub , Sun Yuen Cheong has stood the test of time. It is probably one of the oldest coffee shops in Raub.

And if you are wondering where the heck Raub is….hmm…let me just give you a brief introduction of Raub. Here it goes:-

Located in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, within the state of Pahang, Raub is an easy 1.5 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. Just 110 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, Raub flourished as a gold mining town. When you get on the Karak Highway, you will first pass by the ever famous Genting Highlands. Drive on and you will see a junction on your right leading to Bentong. Raub is the town immediately after Bentong.

Enough of geography – let’s get back to food. I was in Raub for a few hours and decided to make a pit stop to pack some bread and muffins. Surprise, surprise…the muffins were only 20 sen each.

I love the bread, which I ate with kaya bought from the same place. The bread was not only fresh but fluffy as well. I give it thumbs up for taste, aroma, appearance and texture. Truly excellent!

As for the muffins, there were simple, no frills ones. I love the soft and cake-like texture of it.
