Lima Pulo

I recently discovered this place called Lima Pulo located in the Asian Heritage Row. The friendly baba sits in front of his shop, greeting every customer who walks in. A look through the simple menu shows a choice of 10 main dishes.

I chose the Nyonya laksa which is only available on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays. I must say the laksa tasted perfect - even my nyonya grandma would give this an A+.

Restoran Robson Heights Fresh Seafood

This is a very popular restaurant located parallel to the Federal Highway.

The ambience leaves a lot to be desired but every time I come here, I am amazed at how packed and crowded this place can be.

I was there last weekend and the place was really abuzz. I could easily identify some well-known figures from the Malaysian political arena.

This is one of their signature dishes – claypot crab rice. The crab is always served in a separate plate, having done its part in the cooking process. I was told that the crab is placed over white rice so that as the cooking process goes on, the juice from the crab will flow onto the rice, thus making the rice fragrant & of course, delicious.

If you have never had this dish before, you would probably scratch your head wondering what this is. Well, its …believe it or not- super crunchy deep fried brinjals with meat floss on top.

We also had the following dishes:-

SF Seafood, Sungai Buloh

I was at the Sungai Buloh Chinese School for an event and decided to pop into the restaurant next door for some food before heading home. You many choose to dine alfresco or dine in the air-
conditioned section. I chose the latter as it was sweltering hot.

View of LF from Sungai Buloh School

We ordered this dish called the green dragon vegetable (RM8)  and salted vegetable soup (RM6).

This is salted eggs with pork (RM16) , a dish that is rather ‘new’ to me. I love the mild saltiness of the morsels of meat.

This is ikan jebong steamed with some ginger and lots of garlic (RM30) – the freshness of the fish made this dish simply heavenly.

Complimentary dessert -sliced watermelon

Sassorosso

Chef Giovanni  is the man behind Sassorosso, which means red rock. This restaurant is tucked away along the quieter part of Yap Kwan Seng and when you do find it, you find a gem.

I would not say that prices here are affordable and as such I only dine here on very special occasions. I was there this afternoon with a very special guest from overseas  (who simply adores great wine & food). I am so excited to  write about the lobster spaghetti which is absolutely awesome here. Al dente pasta served with an entire lobster which I would describe as fresh, bursting with flavour and absolutely succulent was what this platter was all about.  Be warned however, that it comes with a very hefty price tag ..RM2xx!!

Fukuya, Jalan Delima

A beautiful mansion with  decent parking houses Fukuya. All you need to do is to leave your car with the jockey (for FREE!!) and walk into Fukuya for an out-of- this-world dining experience. You may dine in what I would call the common area or book a room for more privacy. Alternatively if you were bold  (and extremely lucky)like me you could just walk in and try your luck at getting a table or even a room! For the record, I got a room looking out into the beautiful garden and I was told by the friendly waiter John that I was indeed very lucky as it is normally full house here at Fukuya!

I tried the Fuku-Fuku Lunch which was priced at RM40++. It came with appetiser, salad, chawan mushi, rice, miso soup, pickles and dessert. The difficult part was to make 2 selections out of a list of 15 items – cod fish teriyaki, fried scallop, cube cut beef steak, salmon steak with butter sauce, grilled chicken with salt seasoning, tuna & salmon sashimi, salmon sashimi,  grilled saba mackerel, prawn & fish tempura, fried white fish, chicken teriyaki, butter sautéed scallop, beef teriyaki & grilled salmon with salt seasoning.

It took the glutton in me some time to make a decision as  all of the 15 items appealed to me! I finally chose the salmon sashimi and grilled saba mackerel. I must say that the way the food was presented gave my eyes a visual feast and the extremely delicious and satisfying food made me vow to come back soon!

Serai, Life Centre

Serai is helmed by a reknowned chef who has cooked for quite a number of celebrities. With such an excellent CV, the two of us walked into Serai expecting a lot.

When we arrived at Serai, we were immediately ushered to our pre-reserved table….when we enquired, we were told that Serai has a few outlets in the Klang Valley and the famous chef we were dying to meet was not based in this outlet, but was in Empire Subang.

This is known as Serai Platter (RM25) – with some awesome sambal to accompany squid and an entire chicken leg plus some acar , I cant say that this was expensive.

Nasi Ambang (RM20) –although I’ve never fancied nasi ambang, I found this platter a delight. The anchovies were crunchy and the salted fish just right. The broccoli and cauliflower was delicious…all in all, a good combination!

Morganfield, Pavillion KL

This is a non halal outlet serving what I would label as superb ribs. Today, I tried the set lunch which came with bottomless soft drinks…I tell you, if you can gulp down 2 glasses of their super tall soft drinks..I really salute you, lah!

I was first served with some salad - a light salad with tomatoes, capsicum, lettuce, cabbage and some onions, this was a great starter.

This was my main dish – sticky bones. The serving was generous and the ribs were simply juicy and succulent. I recall someone was told me that the ultimate test for ribs was that they should fall off the bones easily…and the ones at Morganfield, I would say, pass with flying colours.

Restaurant Taste of Foo Chow

Red rice wine mee suah to me is synonymous to Foo Chow cuisine. I found myself in Pudu earlier today and decided to give this restaurant called Taste of Foo Chow a try.

I enquired whether they served mee suah in red rice wine and when I was told that they did, I did not even bother to order any other food.
The rice wine was really very red…and the taste was overpowering. I noticed that there was indeed a very generous amount of chicken in this dish. Although this dish was alright, I found the spring onion garnishing a little out of place.

The Olive Tree, Menara Hap Seng

It’s not often that we come across buffet lunch priced below RM30. This afternoon I had lunch at one of such places. RM25 for an eat-all-you-can meal at Olive Tree. If you go in a larger group, the price per head comes down – RM60 nett for 3 pax….and on weekends children below the age of 8 eat for free!

The spread isn’t huge but it is sufficient for a very decent and satisfying meal!

Mulberry Restaurant & Bar, Jalan Ampang

Along a row of what I would call run down buildings, number 9 clearly stands out, what more with the huge font ‘MULBERRY CAFE’. To find the parking to this building is a little on the challenging side if you have not been here before. Let me give you a simple guide as to how to get here. There is obviously no access to the parking lots from the front of the building.

You would need to drive along Jalan Gereja, go up the hill that leads you to St John’s cathedral. Drive past the cathedral and look out for a huge number 9 on your right. Tell the car park attendant that you are going to Mulberry, get the parking paper (yes, it’s just a thin piece of paper) from him and when you dine at Mulberry, get it stamped for free parking. Easy peasy!

Set lunch was available at RM30. I had the fruit punch – love this tangy drink!

I chose Mexican seafood salad for starters. I love the colourful and impeccably presented salad.  The seafood was fresh and the taste was simply superb.

For the main course, I decided on the pan- seared lemon salt red tilapia. Served with sautéed vegetables as well as  pineapple and apricot chutney , I found the taste of this dish to be unusual….I would think that’s the best word I can think of. I wouldn’t say it was delicious, but it wasn’t bad either….it just tasted, well, UNUSUAL!

This is my dessert –semolina pudding. If you are wondering what semolina is, it is the coarse grains which are leftover after flour is milled.

Gilly Café Inn

It was noon and we needed a ‘cave’, a hiding place, to just get out from the scorching heat outside. A look at the set menu told us that prices were reasonable and so we just chilled out at Gilly Café Inn for a short while.

The set came with free orange juice and ice cream. We ordered 4 different sets to share:-

Orange juice

Ice cream

This is Hakka style braised pork (RM9.90) – with some rice at the bottom of the bowl, the braised pork and egg were tasty.

Roast chicken rice (RM8.90) – we all got a pleasant surprise when this arrived. We were thinking of conventional chicken rice….but the owner thought out of the box and presented us with chicken on top of some rice in a bowl. I must say it was good.

Noodle with gravy (RM7.90) – with its thick noodles and equally thick gravy, this dish had sufficient ingredients to make it delicious.

Fried noodles (RM7.90) – stir fried over what I call intense heat from the stove, I have no complaints, but rather compliments for this plate of noodles.
