Breakfast at Remember Come, Kuantan

This morning, I had breakfast  with some friends at this coffee shop with a rather weird name –Remember Come…well, I guess the owner meant to say that we should always remember this shop and go there often.

This is nasi lemak with some peanuts, anchovies, cucumber slices and half a boiled egg. Priced at RM2.50, I must say it is rather expensive. This was served on wax paper and the gravy was separately put in a saucer with just one piece of potato (picture below).

Chicken rice (RM4.50) – tasted alright.

Curry noodles – the gravy was bursting with coconut milk flavour and I really loved it.

Here are the drinks we had..and I highly recommend the teh peng here.

Kampar Old Town Restaurant

This is a branch of the famous Wing Lok Yuen of Kampar known for its pork knuckle, clay pot chicken rice, fish ball noodles as well as its kaya puff and chicken biscuit. This means that the restaurant (the original one, I mean) has a history of close to 70 years dishing out delectable food for Kampar folks!

The USJ branch, located at USJ 11 opens at 7.30am and closes at 4.30pm.

I went in with a very empty stomach earlier in the day and tried a few of their dishes:-

From what I had, I would say the food here is good. I love the barley with gingko here so much that I bought a packet to be eaten at home!

Yik Kee, Karak

With the East Coast Highway, we no longer need to drive through Karak town in order to get to the East Coast. Today, I made a special trip there just for old times sake. My destination was none other than the famous Yik Kee restaurant. Although they have several outlets in the Klang Valley and Gohtong Jaya, nothing beats the original Karak Yik Kee.

I was happy to see that nothing much has changed in Yik Kee physically. I can find the toilets easily and th layout of the restaurant  was just as I remember it. There are 2 sections – air conditioned and non air conditioned. We chose to dine at the former as it was a rather hot afternoon.

Garlic in a covered stainless steel container

A trip to Yik Kee is never complete without their signature sang har meen – and this was the first thing we ordered. Priced at RM46, this plate of noodles was …in one word, AWESOME!!

Fish paste soup (RM12) - this soup may not look appetisingm but trust me, the freshness of the fish can be tasted in every single fish ball.

This is oiled lettuce (RM8) – slightly oily though!

This BBQ duck (RM15)  served with a tangy sauce which certainly was a good complement. It was interesting to note that despite the way the duck was served, the skin was still crisp and the meat pleasingly firm. Love it!

Restoran Kin Kin

Kin Kin claims to be the ‘creator’ of chilli pan mee. It’s amazing how this restaurant that serves only 1 variety of food, in only 1 serving size is always packed during lunch time.

If you are thinking of having a bowl of pan mee in soup, then forget Kin Kin because they only serve chilli pan mee. The chilli flakes are tasty ….add with caution though! The freshly made pan mee is served with an egg and some anchovies and garninshing. Mix them well…and voila…you’ll have the most heavenly pan mee ever!

Kedai Kopi dan Roti Sun Yuen Cheong 新源昌茶室, Raub

Famed for its home-made bread either toasted or steamed with some kaya and butter, this coffee shop along Jalan Tun Razak n Raub , Sun Yuen Cheong has stood the test of time. It is probably one of the oldest coffee shops in Raub.

And if you are wondering where the heck Raub is….hmm…let me just give you a brief introduction of Raub. Here it goes:-

Located in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, within the state of Pahang, Raub is an easy 1.5 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur. Just 110 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur, Raub flourished as a gold mining town. When you get on the Karak Highway, you will first pass by the ever famous Genting Highlands. Drive on and you will see a junction on your right leading to Bentong. Raub is the town immediately after Bentong.

Enough of geography – let’s get back to food. I was in Raub for a few hours and decided to make a pit stop to pack some bread and muffins. Surprise, surprise…the muffins were only 20 sen each.

I love the bread, which I ate with kaya bought from the same place. The bread was not only fresh but fluffy as well. I give it thumbs up for taste, aroma, appearance and texture. Truly excellent!

As for the muffins, there were simple, no frills ones. I love the soft and cake-like texture of it.

Note: Be sure to go early as they open from breakfast til lunch….and often close around 4-5pm

Gathering House, PJ Old Town

Occupying a corner shop lot, this non-air conditioned restaurant has an interesting name – Gathering House.

I browsed through the menu  placed outside the outlet and decided to give it a try. I like the simple ambience , but what made me feel really at home were the marble topped table coupled with the marble stools. For the record, there are benches too, if you prefer not to sit on stools,

The waiter was friendly and when we said we didn’t know what to order, he recommended the day’s special which was nasi lemak.  Priced at RM11.90, this came with a huge serving of fragrant rice, rendang chicken drumstick, a few slices of cucumbers , a fried egg and of course some crunchy anchovies and peanuts. Overall, it was good.

Taufu fah – RM3 – I love its velvety smooth and light texture. Yummy!  Ice lemon tea (far left of photo) comes with the RM11.90 nasi lemak. It was a little too sour for my liking. Cold honey lemon (RM4.30) –perfect- neither too sweet nor tasteless.

This is tea served in what I call olden Chinese coffee shop cup and saucer. This came with the beef breakfast set.

Our beef breakfast set – Slightly pricey at RM16.90, this set consisted of tea and this  platter packed with delicious and nutritious toast, cheese, sunny side up, beef (which was a tad tough), baked beans, salad and some corn. Not bad!

Noodles with soup –RM6 each. I tried both and would say I prefer the kuay teow anytime. The soup was clear and the fish ball fluffy and elastic, as good fish balls should be.

This is simply called crystal fish cake (RM5). I would say it had the right texture and flavour to satisfy my craving.

The highlight of our brunch was of course this unique bowl of strawberry with shaven ice (RM7.90). From where I sat, I could see that it was actually made by shaving a cylindrical block of strawberry flavoured ice in a shaving machine…well, I would say it’s a more advance version as compared to our traditional ice kacang machine. This one uses electricity and the job is done within seconds. The shaved ice is then topped with some ‘pearls’ (the type used in bubble tea) and of course some chopped strawberries.

Restoran Kar Heong SS14 Subang

I’ve always been told that to identify a good restaurant all you need to do is to follow the crowd –meaning that you take a look at the number of customers eating in the restaurant, and if there are plenty of customers, that would NORMALLY mean that the food that is alright. And that was how I ended up at Kar Heong in SS14 Subang Jaya.

Without the slightest idea of what I was in for, I parked my car a few lots away and walked in. As I walked in I saw roasted pork, char siew and chicken –oh, a chicken rice shop in a row of shops that has countless number of bak kut teh shops!

One plus point of Kar Heong is that it has air conditioning , and this makes it a pleasant place to dine in as the day was rather hot.

Half a kampong chicken is priced at RM26. The smooth texture of the chicken skin was to die for. I really loved the taste of this chicken when eaten with oil rice (RM1.20 a bowl) . To enhance the taste of the chicken I just had to put lashings after lashings of their specially made chilli sauce.

This is hor fan with prawn wanton (RM6.50)– the broth was delicious and you can easily tell that lots of chicken bones have been put in to make this broth what it was.

Roasted pork and char siew  (RM13) – with a tinge of sweetness and saltiness and a combination of fat and lean meat, this dish was alright.

Pork balls in broth (RM8) – 10 pork balls in a nutritious broth –well, that says it all.

Ipoh bean sprouts (RM4) – short, thick and crunchy.

The one thing that confuses me here at Kar Heong is their staff – at times I was just tongue tied as I did not know what language to use to communicate with them – er….English can? Bahasa? Mandarin? Cantonese? ……..err…let me figure that out!

Hai Peng Kopitiam, Kemaman

Hai Peng Kopitiam has been around for as long as I can remember.  Whenever we made a stop at Kemaman for tea  time(or should I say coffee time) it had always had to be at  Hai Peng Kopitiam.

The place is full of people as I popped in at 3.30pm on a Saturday afternoon.  Getting a table proved to be a great chore…but hey, good food comes with a ‘sacrifice’ right? So I waited patiently for someone to vacate their table. The long wait finally ended when a family of 4 got up & went off to the cashier to settle the bill.

Some items for sale - nasi lemak, coffee

I sat down & noticed that the shop was filled with people of all races. And lots, and I mean LOTS of smokers too…..which was something that really put me off.

Service was, as usual, lackluster – but I guess this is how it is in Kemaman where the pace of life is definitely many  folds slower than the busy KL life I am used to.
Coffee beans in a big bottle

After several attempts to catch the attention of the waiters, someone finally came to take my order. This is what I had:-

Milo Hai Peng (RM2.50) – a little diluted and I honestly think they ought to put in more Milo powder.

Toasted bun & bread with kaya (RM1 per set) – the bun & bread were toasted using charcoal and when they were served, the aromatic bun will just make you feel like grabbing the bun & eating it right away – which was what I did – Simply great!

Home made tuna sandwich (RM5.90) – I took one bite and looked hard at the menu – no where was it mentioned that it was spicy tuna – so I wasn’t prepared for the spiciness of this!

Garlic bread – 3 pieces for RM5.90 . Although the crust was hard, the bread was surprisingly soft and delicious.

I finished up all my food and left as there was already someone eyeing my table. Wow! Business sure is brisk here.
