KK Mayflower, Kota Kemuning

I noticed that there are 2 restaurants with the same name & they are located quite close to each other. I chose to dine at the one that looks less posh because I have been told that the prices here are more reasonable. Of course the other one has the advantage when it comes to ambience.

Salad bean curd (RM15) – with a selection of 2 dippings which were mayonnaise and thousand island dressing this so called salad was actually deep fried bean curd. Just look at the crispy crunchy crust.

Steamed garoupa (RM49) – the fish was very fresh and the steaming time was perfect so much so that the flesh was juicy and yummy.

Braised spare ribs in special sauce (RM30) – I would choose this dish over the garoupa anytime…why? Because separating the meat from the bone was a breeze! The ribs were very well marinated and every bite was pleasant.

Lotus root soup (RM26) – nothing spectacular, just normal.

Both the vegetable dishes we ordered were excellent. -stir fried dragon vege with garlic (RM12) & stir fried paku with belacan (RM8).

Mum Mum Seafood, Bt Tinggi

The Bukit Tinggi area in Klang never runs out of good eateries. Today, I went to check out Mum Mum Seafood, which hails all the way from Kuala Selangor.

The walls boasts of photographs of their signature dishes…and judging from the wide collection of pictures, one can easily tell that they can cook a huge variety of food.

CNY set menu

Now…to see whether they do it well or not

We ordered tofu – cooked with a thick, brown  gravy and garnished with some chopped spring onions, the velvety smooth tofu was flavourful.

Pork – cooked with some honey and sesame – this was sweet and easy on the teeth.

Steamed crab – this method of cooking completely proved that the crab (note we only had a 750-gramme crab…it was SO huge, it filled the entire plate!) was fresh and very meaty. Loved it!

Welcome Seafood, PJS 8

Well, I was still in the mood for CNY food and we decided to meet up for lunch at Sunway Mentari. Welcome Seafood has air- conditioning and its doors are always literally open….so you feel welcomed here!
As there was 6 of us, we chose the RM298 set which came with a pot of tea.

The first dish was lou sang – which came with this plate of white fish. I must say that although it wasn’t salmon which is many people’s choice of fish for lou sangs, it was extremely delicious. I like this dish which is only available during the CNY season…..the mess we created – sweet, sourish and  rainbow coloured!

Shark’s fin soup – with real shark’s fin and lots of crab meat!

Stewed pork trotter – with its tasty and gravy and sinfully fat meat – this dish was simply awesome!

This  is called one bucket chicken or chicken in a bucket – steamed chicken served in what to me, resembles a rice bucket. The kampong chicken was surprisingly tender and bursting with flavour.

Steamed white pomfret – with lots of garnishing and meticulously sliced ginger, the fresh fish was a great delight.

We also ordered an additional dish  -steamed white tofu.

Rice wrapped in lotus leaf – the rice was well cooked with some mushrooms and was definitely top notch in terms of taste .

This set also came with Chinese pancakes and longan soyabean – both were marvellous.

Chinese New Year dishes

Happy Chinese New  Year!!  This year I’ve decided to showcase some food which Chinese serve during the CNY period. I shall limit the food to those served during lunch and dinner.Every dish served has a meaning.

This is mixed vegetables. Typically it should contain some vegetables with long stems and leaves – this serves as a pray for long life for the elderly. Quite often, black sea moss (髮菜) is also included (not seen in this picture for environmental purposes) as it symbolises prosperity.

Abalone is often served in soup – just like the ones in the photos below – abalone symbolises good fortune.

Abalone with chicken soup

Abalone with sea cucumber soup

Duck () – symbolises fertility – I’ve been served roasted duck and Peking duck.

This is a meat ball (肉丸) dish – meat balls are round and this means ‘reunion’….that the family will always be united.

A pork dish is a must as it is said to bring about wealth, strength and abundant blessings.

Nestum prawns – () – in Cantonese this is pronounced as ‘ha’ which sounds like the sound of laughter – it is hoped that after eating the prawns we will have laughter i.e happiness all year long.

Chinese New Year dishes

Shark’s fin soup – this dish used to be a must at every reunion dinner.  In ancient China, it was only consumed by the emperors. Sharks fin began to gain popularity as the average Chinese could soon afford to have it albeit only on special occasions such as Chinese New Year and at weddings.  I love the soft, stringy texture of this soup (at Noble House)

Abalone – another delicacy consumed during special events. The ones served at Noble House this Chinese New Year were priced at over RM500 each, but I must admit, they were superb!

Restoran Kim Mua Lau, Jenjarom

满楼海鲜酒家@Restoran Kim Mua Lau
Happy CNY once again and especially to the Hokkiens who celebrate CNY on the 9th day. CNY is not complete without a visit to the reknowned FGS Dong Zen Buddhist Temple in Jenjarom (佛光山). But, before that let’s take care of our tummies!
The best way to get to Jenjarom is via the KESAS highway. After paying the RM2.20 toll at Kemuning, look out for Banting. Follow this signage all the way until you come to Teluk Panglima Garang. A few kilometres ahead you will see RHB Bank on your right. Turn right, go on for while and you will see Kim Mua Lau, a corner one-shoplot restaurant on your right.
The ten of us arrived at Kim Mua Lau at 6.30pm and the place is already abuzz. Business is good this time of the year when people flock to the temple nearby. We ordered 6 dishes.
This is the RM21 three-cup chicken (三杯). This is very much a Taiwanese dish. The 3 cups used in this dish are an equal portion of the following:- sesame oil, Chinese cooking wine and soya sauce. It had a very exotic aroma and I really loved the sauce.
Three-cup chicken
This is the spare ribs with pumpkin in a clay pot (RM21). This dish is not only yummy….but very healthy. Pumpkin is said to be loaded with beta-carotene, an essential antioxidant that fights cancer.
This is prawns with corn (RM39). I must admit this is the first time I come across this. What a delectable dish!
This is a simple dish of stir fried yau mak with garlic (RM12). Great dish as there was sufficient wok hei.
Steamed lala with garlic (RM21) was the next dish we savoured. We specifically requested for this dish to be done without any chillies – for 2 reasons:-
Someone in our group couldn’t take spicy food
2- We needed to gauge the freshness of the lala
This dish scored a perfect 10. Fresh lala steamed with sufficient garlic truly make a mouth-watering dish that no one could resist!
Well, the ,last dish is one that you must definitely try. Fried mee hoon with crabs (RM51) –something truly unique! The dish actually had more crabs than noodles…and I ain’t complaining J
The total bill for our dinner for 10pax came in less than RM200. Overall, it was a very satisfying meal.
Here are some pictures of the temple. It’s really worth a visit. Ample free parking and admission is also free.

All About CNY & FOOD, FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD!

Happy Birthday everyone! In case you are wondering what I am rattling on about, Chinese believe that the 7th day of the new year is everyone's birthday (人日). It is on this day that everyone grows a day....oops...a year older.

Here are some home cooked food I've had so far this CNY.
