Restoran Ko Hua, Sekinchan
It was late in the
afternoon when we drove past Sekinchan and we agreed that we needed to break
our journey for afternoon tea.
Ko Hua is a corner
lot shop and there were a few men busy chit-chatting and smoking away to while
away their time.
We ordered fried
noodle (RM9) and some fried squid (RM13). I love the deep fried squid, in what
I would call a light, puffy batter, making them crackling on the outside yet
tender on the inside. This made the squid easy to chew and of course toothsome.

Secret Recipe
I don’t normally accumulate photographs of a particular eatery
but this is what I’ll do this time around. Secret Recipe is a franchise that is
well known to the average Malaysian. I’ve been to many outlets, amongst them,
the newly re-opened outlet in Capital Square, Amcorp Mall and Section 52 PJ.
I shall tell you what I think of
the food as I can safely say that the service varies from outlet to outlet. In
some the servers go all out to please, whereas in some, you just wait for your
food til you feel like leaving.
This is a basket of complimentary
chips – crispy and tasty, I have no complaints as far as the chips are
concerned. However, I have noticed that some outlets serve the chips right
after your order is placed but some won’t bother giving you any until and
unless you ask for it!
Ice lemon tea – zesty and pleasing,
this is my must order drink whenever I dine at Secret Recipe.
Salad – I love this simple yet
nutritious salad. This one had very fresh
vegetables and I love it.
This is the curry which I would
described as being super rich – people in Malaysia will say it’s ‘very lemak’
as it is very rich in coconut milk (read FAT)!
Chicken with mushroom sauce served
with a hearty bowl of corn and some rice – the chicken portion is generous but
I find this served with a little too much gravy.
My all- time favourite Japanese
soba – Secret Recipe has two versions of this i.e the vegetarian and non-
vegetarian versions. I prefer this version which has some meat. The
al-dente noodles are a pleasure to savour
and the large quantity of vegetables that come in this bowl complements the
noodles very well. I often like to take my time with this as the crunch celery,
carrots and cabbage needs some careful chewing.

KungFu Paradise, Paradigm Mall
With a
name that doesn’t appeal to me, walking
into KungFu Paradise was definitely a huge gamble. The simple menu
displayed at the exterior showed that it served what I call simple dishes.
| Refreshing drinks! |
My son was dying to try the seafood udon
(RM18.90) and insisted that we went in.
First came the ‘stove’ and then the huge ‘pot’ of udon which was filled
with awesomeness – al-dente udon served with eggs and some condiments.
Dry noodles(RM10.90)
- with 2 sausages, an egg and a stalk of
vegetable, this perfectly done noodles was yummy.
Japanese
curry (RM14.90) – I frankly think that this does not look like Japanese curry ,
at least the colour wasn’t right to me, but the thick curry was very delicious.
I also like the fact that they took the effort to put some black sesame as
toppings on the rice.
Seafood
tomato fried rice (RM13.90) – the rice was a little soggy, but the taste was
pretty alright.

Restoran Makanan Laut Loong Sing, Bukit Tinggi
It was time for makan ,after a
walkabout in Bukit Tinggi trying to haggle for the best priced fresh
vegetables which were on sale. There were lots of people there probably due to the long Hari Raya Haji weekend.
We decided on Loong Sing as the place was full
of customers, which usually meant that the food was good. The first thing that
caught my attention was this bottled filled with tiny chilies. I gathered enough courage to
try one…and boy , it was really HOT! I had no choice but to grab a bottle of
this imperatae cane drink.
This is vermicelli in a pungent
ginger frog leg soup. I would say the texture
of the frog meat is more tender than chicken and definitely fat free!
Ginger lends a sweet yet pungent taste to the soup.
We also tried 2 other noodle
dishes and I must say that the Loong Sing does wonders for noodle lovers! No
wonder the place is always packed!

Meng Kee Peking Duck
The owners of
this restaurant certainly own the noodle shop nearby as they bear the same
name. I did a ‘test’ to confirm this.
I ordered a bowl of noodles and asked them to bring it to me at Meng Kee Peking Duck –the waiter said alright provided I pay him cash when food is served. And this is a picture of the bowl of noodles we tried – smooth, fine noodles with lots of goji berry- it was good!
We ordered some
dishes to go with rice – half a roasted duck (RM31) – I must say that this was
indeed the best roasted duck I’ve ever had. Crispy on the outside, yet
succulent inside. Superb!
Pork ribs in marmite
(RM16) – this dish was alright, but I would have preferred the meat cut into
smaller pieces.
Crab meat tofu soup
(RM12)
Stir fried Hong Kong
kalian (RM9) – the serving was rather small, but the kai lan was fried on high
flame and as a result of this was good.

AK Noodles House, Main Place
AK
Noodle House is located on the lower ground floor of the Main Place Mall in
USJ21. I like the open concept of this eatery – it makes you feel welcome as
you can approach it easily. I must emphasise that this is a simple, no frills,
eatery.
Business
was surely very good when we were there. We had to wait to get ourselves a
table. Finally, a family of four left and we were happy to settle down into our
chairs, our feet aching from the long wait!
We
ordered watermelon juice (RM5.90) and homemade cincau (RM3). I always like it
when drinks are served in this jug looking container. The drinks were good and
I love the watermelon juice as it wasn’t diluted nor too sweet.
Dried
wanton mee (RM8.50) – the springy noodles were excellent and this comes with a
bowl of soup with foo chok skin, some fish balls, fish cake and some seaweed.
Curry
laksa (RM9.50)
Bitter
gourd mackerel rice (RM15.90) -I love
this – fresh mackerel paired with bitter gourd – the end result of which was a
really superb tasting bowl of soup. Love it!
Kuay
teow soup (RM8.50)
Handmade
fish ball soup (RM15) –this bowl of soup does not come with any noodles, but
was served with some seaweed and greens. I would say that this was a little
pricey although I have no complaints about the taste.

Restoran Heng Kee Ulu Yam Noodles, Bt Tinggi Klang
I was in the Bukit Tinggi area with my
colleague and we decided to grab a quick lunch. As the weather was hazy, I decided to order a fresh coconut
to quench my thirst and hopefully clear my throat.
I then noticed that this simple
restaurant has the ability to cook up so many wonderful dishes as evident from
the pictures adorning the walls. But, as were did not have much time before our
next meeting I decided to have the Ulu Yam noodles whilst she opted for what I
would label as unadventurous Cantonese noodles. I’ll tell you about my Ulu Yam
lor meen – with vinegar and lots of lard, this was a platter of awesomeness, if
there’s such a word!

We also tried this - can’t remember what it’s called, but just
look at what’s inside!
