Restaurant Joe Joe, Viva Home

We wanted to try something not too complicated at Viva Home and that was how we turned up at Joe Joe.

The three of us ordered different drinks :- apple &lime with sour plum (RM7.90); soya bean with grass jelly (RM5.90) and celery & starfruit with sour plum (RM7.90).

I had the seafood noodle soup (RM11.90)  - with a generous amount of prawns and crabsticks and fish fillet, this ‘pot’ of noodle was  nothing short of exquisite.

Cantonese style fried noodles (RM8.90) – bursting with flavour, will certainly tingle your taste bud.

Tiger prawn sang mee (RM15.90) – fragrant noodles with a gravy which was a tad starchy for me.

Fried vege fish ball (RM6.90) – smooth and springy textured fish balls are always a delight.

Gilly Café Inn

It was noon and we needed a ‘cave’, a hiding place, to just get out from the scorching heat outside. A look at the set menu told us that prices were reasonable and so we just chilled out at Gilly Café Inn for a short while.

The set came with free orange juice and ice cream. We ordered 4 different sets to share:-

Orange juice

Ice cream

This is Hakka style braised pork (RM9.90) – with some rice at the bottom of the bowl, the braised pork and egg were tasty.

Roast chicken rice (RM8.90) – we all got a pleasant surprise when this arrived. We were thinking of conventional chicken rice….but the owner thought out of the box and presented us with chicken on top of some rice in a bowl. I must say it was good.

Noodle with gravy (RM7.90) – with its thick noodles and equally thick gravy, this dish had sufficient ingredients to make it delicious.

Fried noodles (RM7.90) – stir fried over what I call intense heat from the stove, I have no complaints, but rather compliments for this plate of noodles.

Restoran Janbo, Cheras

A special day calls for some celebration and that was how we ended up at Janbo on a hot Sunday afternoon. It was fairly easy to get a parking spot but even then the burning hot sun made the 80 metres walk from my car to the restaurant somewhat a torture!

We didn’t want to split hairs thinking of what to eat, so we took the easy way out by ordering the RM528+ set which could feed 10 people, but since there were 13 of us, we asked for 1.5 sets….hahaha!

This is the chef special hot & cold dish combination – I love the array of colours in this platter and the clever use of the red, wafer flower to fill in the empty slot on the platter. The taste of all items in this first dish was certainly above par.

Double boiled chicken golden sharks fin soup with golden dumplings – although the taste was acceptable, I didn’t like the idea of a dumpling in my shark’s fin soup!

Steamed garoupa with soya sauce – I liked the fact that they used sea garoupa as the flesh was firm and did not have that earthy smell that I disliked.

Herbal chicken – the original set had crispy duck but since some of us do not like duck, we asked for it to be changed. When this dish came, I was shocked as I had never expected to see herbal chicken ‘swimming’ in a huge plate….what I mean is that there was way too much gravy…and I wonder which part of it had herbs in it. Anyway, we dug into the chicken and …….the inside was still frozen. We sent the entire plate back to the kitchen for reheating.

Portugese style seawater prawns – Wow! This had to be the best dish for the meal. Fresh prawns cooked to perfection.

This is called braised mixed vegetable – with lots of mushrooms and some gingko, this dish looked interesting and was delicious as well.

Fried rice with XO sauce – slightly dry, otherwise it was ok.

And for dessert we were served with bird’s nest with sugar cane and some Chinese pancakes.
