Silom Village Don Muang Airport

Finding good food at the airport has always been a challenge for me personally but Bangkok never fails to surprise me with good food. Silom Village located on the upper level of Don Muang is one such example.

We had ample time before our flight home as we arrived early so as to have more time to walk leisurely around the airport.
Getting a table at Silom Village in the evening wasn’t easy as the number of people at the airport was simply overwhelming. We finally got a table but whilst some of us were browsing through the menu, the others were busy looking at what other people were having so as to gauge what was good there.
From our observations these were what we ordered:-

Once again all the dishes were superb but the seafood kerabu was especially delectable. I love the taste freshly squeezed lime on fresh seafood . And if you notice the yellow flower at the side of the plate…well, that’s carved from mango…how creative!

Chocolote Ville, Bangkok

I really don’t know what to start babbling about when it comes to Chocolate Ville. I am still very excited about the place…Well, perhaps I should tell you about my journey there. From my hotel in On Nut to Chocolate Ville, it took over an hour….we went through small roads and massively jammed roads to arrive at Chocolate Ville at opening time which was 4pm. The journey back to the hotel took a mere 15 minutes because the cabbie refused to use the meter and told us that he would use the highway. Frankly, even as I am writing here, I have no complaints as I would rather pay a premium to use the highway and save an hour! Sigh….if only the first taxi driver had told me about the highway, I would have gladly used it.

The first impression I got when we arrived at Choc Ville was it was very westernised. The ambience was simply perfect and everything was certainly above par. I would advise anyone coming here to make a reservation first as the place gets pretty packed as the evening progresses. It is best to arrive at around 4pm as this place is simply picturesque and the photos taken here would simply turn out perfect. There is even a tower which you can climb to have an aerial view of the place.

After walking around for about 2 hours we headed to our pre-booked table to savour the food. Despite its very westernised ambience, English is not commonly used here and only a handful of the servers here speak English. In fact, many of the waiters and waitresses here do not even understand English, but that would not pose a problem as the menu has lots of pictures.
These are the food & drinks we ordered to share:-

I would say that all the dishes ordered were perfect but if I had to choose one dish, I would highly recommend the ribs – succulent, juicy, yummy..well, I just cant get the correct word to describe these ribs which fall right out of the bone…simply marvellous!

The damage for the meal …I would say it was reasonably priced as the quality of the food is simply outstanding.

Thai coffee shop, near Platinum Mall

I’ve no idea what to call this place as its name is in Thai. Not a single foreigner was there as we walked in and only an elderly lady there spoke some English. She helped us to order all the food.

I had to have some bitter gourd soup as I was told that bitter gourd can help reduce body heat. After walking for hours in Platinum Mall and the surrounding the shops in the sweltering heat, I realised that I had not been taken on a ride and that the cooling effect of the bitter gourd soup was for real!

Thai chicken rice – well, even the chicken looks different from the ones I am used to eating back at home. I noticed that Thai chicken has less fat and was slightly tougher!

Food Court, Bobae Tower

It’s a nice feeling coming to this food court once again after more than 1 year! The system hasn’t changed from the last time I was here i.e you need to buy coupons from the cashier as the individual stalls do not deal with cash…they only accept coupons.

I had this last time and I still maintain my stand that the portion is just sufficient to line the stomach.

This is bamboo shoots soup – tasty but definitely not for those who don’t like the smell (read as stench) of ammonia. The soup with the chicken drumstick would be a better option.

Fish – In Bangkok, the fish is always fresh and yummy….and when ‘paired’ with such a mouth watering bowl of chilli dip make such a wonderful dish.

Duck thigh noodles – well, I didn’t try this but according to the person who did, it was superb.

Fried noodles – looks like our version of char kuay teow – but the noodles are broader and well, tastier too.

Crispy popiah to complete a very decent meal! Yummy!

Here’s the Thai writing for this place. For your information this place is definitely a MUST go place if you have empty bags which you intend to fill to the brim before coming back to Malaysia.

Yaowaraj Food & Drink , Chinatown Bangkok

I must say that I was  not surprised at all when I arrived at Bangkok’s Chinatown. I won’t elaborate but I think you will get what I mean when I say that it’s typical of any Chinatowns in the world J

Posh looking restaurants were seen along both sides of the extremely busy street but we settled for a more toned-down one (a.k.a simple eatery). What drew us to Yaowaraj was this gentleman who was manning a stall selling some snacks outside the eatery. We were told by a local Thai lady who spoke a fair amount of Mandarin that this was a very delicious snack and that we should try some. We asked the gentleman whether we could order some to be consumed with our dinner at Yaowaraj and he said it was alright.

So we had this and I must say it tasted surprisingly good. The sourish salty vegetables on top was a stark contrast from the bland white kuih at the bottom and this was certainly what made this yummy.

As fish maw is cheap and abundant in Bangkok, we ordered not one but two bowls of this soup. This soup was thick and slightly starchy but I can tell you it was excellent. We also had a simple wanton soup.

This is rice with basil and minced meat. The meat was very spicy but I can tell that it was cooked in very high flame, hence it was wonderfully  appetising.

This is the Chinatown version of stir fried mixed vegetables which had bean sprouts, choy sum, some black Chinese mushrooms and shredded cabbage. I am normally not ‘big’ on mixed vegetables but I found this dish to be delectable.
