Sherwood’s Kuantan

Sherwood is said to be  one of Kuantan’s best Western restaurants. We went there this afternoon to have our fill of some of its dishes. As I walked in, I could see lots of bread, cheese and other items on sale.

Mixed salad (RM7.50)

Mixed grill (RM30) – some of the meat was slightly tough, but overall the platter was pretty ok.

Mushroom soup (RM6) – the thick soup had lots of fresh mushrooms in it and was certainly a hit amongst us.

Garlic bread (RM5.50) – my comment would be : not garlicky enough.

 Pizza (RM34) – pretty alright!

Spaghetti boloqnese (RM24) – plain looking yet acceptable in terms of taste.

Chicken chop (RM21) – I think this was the best dish – in terms of presentation and taste. The tender chicken was well seasoned and delicious.

Milk shake (RM7.80) – the looks of this milk shake certainly didn’t get my ‘stamp of approval’

Farm House, Kuantan

Being the adventurous person that I am, I decided to try out Farm House. The ambience is pleasant and I love the stark contrast it has from the sweltering heat outside.

This is watercress soup, painstakingly boiled in tiny crock pots lined up in a pretty row. As such the soup tasted wonderful  and the RM14.80 damage to our pockets justified.

This is tasty otak roll (RM8.80), which, well lived up to its name – tasty.

Fried squid (RM14.80)  -crunchy and yummy

Bentong  tofu (RM8.80) – well, I’ve always known that Bentong is famous for its ginger, but tofu???
Anyway, we tried this dish and the tofu was filled with meat. It was indeed startling!

Yam roll with duck (RM11.80) – this was one unique dish that everyone enjoyed .

Pork rib with bitter gourd (RM11.80) – steamed to a voluptuously tender texture, the  ribs were easy to eat.

Salted fish with kampong chicken (RM11.80) – the combo was simply out of this world!

Deep fried prawns in batter - not so healthy after all!

Pig trotter (RM16.80)

Dragon One Seafood Restaurant, Kuantan

Along the busy stretch of Jalan Haji Ahmad, Dragon One Seafood offers an escape from the noise produced by cars zooming along the road. Occupying a corner shop lot, this restaurant offers free wifi for its customers.

I was there for dinner recently and I must say the food there is good and the service pretty alright.

These are some of the dishes that I had:-

I must announce to you that the ikan jebong cooked asam style had the right amount of tanginess without being overly fiery. The pleasant savoury taste was definitely great!

Breakfast at Remember Come, Kuantan

This morning, I had breakfast  with some friends at this coffee shop with a rather weird name –Remember Come…well, I guess the owner meant to say that we should always remember this shop and go there often.

This is nasi lemak with some peanuts, anchovies, cucumber slices and half a boiled egg. Priced at RM2.50, I must say it is rather expensive. This was served on wax paper and the gravy was separately put in a saucer with just one piece of potato (picture below).

Chicken rice (RM4.50) – tasted alright.

Curry noodles – the gravy was bursting with coconut milk flavour and I really loved it.

Here are the drinks we had..and I highly recommend the teh peng here.

Old Forest Cafe, Kuantan

I stumbled  upon Old Forest Café I was making my way to a friend’s house in Kuantan recently. The large , green signboard certainly did stand out and that was how we ended up having my tea break there.

I like the fact that your cutlery is given to you in a cup of hot water – it always gives me the impression that the owner places great emphasis on  cleanliness and that to me, is a pull factor.

This is kuay teow soup – served with lots of green vegetables and fish cake, it was tasty.

Nasi lemak – the green colour must have come from the pandanus leaf used – the rice was fragrant and delicious.

French fries  - nothing special, just alright.

This innocuously simple dish was surprisingly a favourite of mine – I’ll give it a 10 for taste!

Sun Fong Restaurant, Kuantan

The Star City area in Kuantan is relatively ‘new’ and has lots of makan places as well as boutiques. We drove around looking for something to eat at quarter to 12. The shutters of Sun Fong were three quarter open & we waited until 12 noon for them to be completely open.

The walls on the left and right of the restaurant were filled with photos of food, many of which are their signature dishes.

We ordered 6 dishes :-
Salted vegetable soup  (RM10) – what I liked about this soup was that it was cooked in the traditional Cantonese way i.e it had asam boi in it to give the soup an extra oomph!

This is called Australian ribs (RM28) – the sauce was sweet and this blended very well with the tender ribs.

Stir fried yau mak (RM10) & choy sum (RM8) – both the vegetable dishes were superb. The vegetables were cooked just fine – not overcooked nor too raw.

This dish was something really unique – prawn fillet with macademia nuts in orange sauce. Initially we were quite sceptical about this dish, but I must say it was pleasantly delicious.  Now I know that macademia and orange could make prawns so delectable.

Steamed garoupa  fish –nyonya style (RM60) – I  was shocked at the price of this dish as the fish wasn’t that big. However, credit must be given where it is due – the gravy was simply wonderful and the crunchy pieces of okra added the extra boost to the entire platter.

In conclusion, I would say that the food here is excellent, but a little pricey.
