Restoran Fatty Chong, Taman Sri Sentosa

Occupying  a corner lot, just across the road from Checkers is this air-conditioned restaurant that I’ve driven past numerous times whenever I do my grocery shopping at Checkers. Today, I decided to have dinner there with some friends.
The ten of us arrived at different intervals as some were lucky to find a parking spot at the front of the restaurant while those who arrived slightly later had to walk further.

The meal commences with what we Malaysians call ABC soup – boiled to perfection with onions, potatoes and carrots, this soup was definitely a good start to our dinner. And the best part was that it was complimentary.

This is butter prawns. I’ll say that it is probably the best butter prawn I’ve had in a while. Just look at the fineness of the butter with coconut milk strips – one look and I knew I had fallen in love with this super fragrant dish!

Steam fish –this was a simple dish which was very palatable as the freshness of the fish made it simply awesome.

Another 2 dishes ordered for those who could not take spicy food – stir fried san choy with garlic & stir fried baby French beans. I must say that based on what I tasted thus far, the chef must be superb.

Kam heong lala – lala cooked with dried chillies – again the lalas were fresh and the spiciness of the chillies was just right, not overpowering.

All in all I would say that Fatty Chong is a restaurant that I wouldn’t mind dining at every week…the food here is good, the ingredients are fresh and the prices are reasonable.

Sam You Claypot, PJ New Town

This restaurant is not to be confused with Sam You which is located in PJ New Town too. Sam You Claypot basically does chicken rice and a selection of other food which are served in claypots, hence the name Sam You Claypot.

These were the drinks we ordered:-
Shali sour plum (RM2.80) and cincau (RM2). The cincau comes in a bottle, which was a plus because if you can’t finish it there, you could always take the bottle with you. The shali plum drink was brilliant!

Kerabu chicken feet (RM5) – with lots of chicken feet, the price can be considered cheap. However, I found this dish a tad too sour for me.

Stewed pork with mui choy (RM15) – mui choy always makes me eat more and that was what exactly happened today. I had to order an extra bowl of rice!

Stewed duck with black beans (RM16) – this dish was not only aromatic but the meat was tender and easy on the teeth!

This is called black vinegar pork leg (RM12) – when we ordered this , we expected just a tiny portion – we made our judgement based on the pricing. But, when it was served, we were in for a huge surprise as the serving was really huge. The dark brown, succulent pork was sweet and sourish, just the way I loved it.

The picture above shows the yummy yau mak we had  (RM7). I like the fact that the vegetables were not dried up and withered when served.

Restoran Yi Poh , PJ Old Town

Occupying a corner shoplot which once housed a Chinese medicine shop, Yi Poh prides itself as being a noodle house. If fast and efficient service is what you want, then look no further when you are in PJ Old Town.

The foreign workers here have what I would say is a reasonable command of English, making communication a breeze. The menu was already on the table when we arrived at half past eleven in the morning. There is a sheet of paper for you to write down what you want.

We gave our order sheet to the friendly waiter who then painstakingly repeated our orders.

This is the pickled chillies and chilli oil – take as much as you can consume.

Loh shee fun – I believe this is their signature dish as it is featured in the shops signage.  What makes this loh shee fun unique is its length (very long!) and its silky smooth texture. All you need to do is to mix all the ingredients well and voila….dig in.

This is yellow noodles with minced meat and char siew. Again, being a ‘dry’ noodle, you need to mix them all well and ensure that every strand of noodle get coated in the black sauce before consuming.

Dried wanton noodles – with some vegetables and delicious char siew, the springy wan ton noodles were a delight.

Whether the crowd at Yi Poh is testament of the taste of the noodles – you judge for yourself.

Yamada Japanase Restaurant

Yamada means (山田)  literally translated as mountain paddy field is a rather common Japanese family name. I don’t know how this restaurant got its name and I ain’t gonna guess.
Yamada is situated across the main road from the famous Sime Darby Medical Centre, formerly known as  SJMC (Subang Jaya Medical Centre).  The door leading into Yamada is an electric door which opens up whenever a potential customer walks in.
I walked in and chose a table for 4. I like the concept here whereby the high partitions give ample privacy to diners.

Kitsune udon (RM25)  - a bowl of warm noodles served with deep fried noodles never fails provide a very comforting feeling.

Garlic fried rice – priced at RM15, this plate of rice was definitely very aromatic and appetising.

Tobiko maki (RM10) – this certainly stands out from the many makis I’ve had for one obvious reason – the undoubtedly fresh ingredients used.

Beef teppanyaki (RM48) – frankly the price tag took me aback, but one spoonful of it told me why. The “iron plate”  style of cooking was top-notch, hence we were presented with a mouth watering platter.
This is the sashimi unagi set (RM70)- which comprises of a whole lot of things to eat…at least that was how I felt at the end of the meal –all pigged out! The unagi was superb – rich in Vitamin A, E and protein, unagi has always been known as a stamina booster. The tempura was fluffy and crisp.
Yamada bento (RM75)

Aotake (RM12) -青竹- literal translation for this would be ..errr….green bamboo! I think this is because this dessert is served in bamboo. I like the uniqueness of this rather sweet dessert.

This is called kuzu manjyu (RM12) – in one word – delicious!

Suma Japanese Restaurant, Sogo KL

Suma is a Japanese restaurant located on the 6th floor of the Sogo Shopping Complex. As you enter Sogo, take the lifts on your right to level 6 and it will open right at Suma’s entrance.

I was rather surprised to find this place abuzz on a working day. Many office workers from the banks nearby were having their meal there. A quick look at the menu tells me that prices here are on the higher end.

I ordered an express bento which costs RM40. The wait for its arrival was rather long. So much so for an EXPRESS bento, huh!

The bento consisted of a bowl of rice –not any ordinary bowl, but one that is what I’ll called shaped like a 5-petal flower. It came with unagi as well as salmon sashimi. The sashimi was thinly sliced and very fresh. Along with this bento was also a bowl of miso soup and some salad. 2 slices each of watemelons and honeydew as dessert completed my lunch for today.

Sakae Sushi, Paradigm Mall Kelana Jaya

Another boring weekend and since I’ve nothing lined up for the day, ended up at Paradigm Mall for lunch. Finding a parking space was as simple as ABC, probably because I was there before the crowd came in at noon.

As usual I grabbed some mochi (RM5.99) – 3 pieces placed in a red plate. I’ve always loved the texture of mochi which I would describe as chewy!

This is the haru set. Priced at RM24.90, this set of salmon and chicken was my choice. The salmon was good, but the chicken was slightly tough.

Fuyu (RM31.90) – with unagi and some tempura. I tried some tempura and it was decent by my standards. I really loathe eating tempura which is soggy – I find soggy tempuras somewhat uninspiring visually and also to the taste bud.

Chicken teriyaki ramen (RM12.90) – with a texture that can be said to be springy with substance, this bowl of ramen was superb. I love the sight of it and eating it was a pleasure. The black fungus went well with the chicken.

I must say that the food at this particular Sakae outlet tasted far better, to me that is,  than the many other outlets I’ve been to.

Restoran Kin Kin

Kin Kin claims to be the ‘creator’ of chilli pan mee. It’s amazing how this restaurant that serves only 1 variety of food, in only 1 serving size is always packed during lunch time.

If you are thinking of having a bowl of pan mee in soup, then forget Kin Kin because they only serve chilli pan mee. The chilli flakes are tasty ….add with caution though! The freshly made pan mee is served with an egg and some anchovies and garninshing. Mix them well…and voila…you’ll have the most heavenly pan mee ever!
