Kit Kee Restaurant, SS14

The signboard of this restaurant clearly states that the person behind it is the son of the famous Keong Kee restaurant which was once located in Imbi.

We decided to try this restaurant as it was a relatively new one as compared to the rest along the same row , facing the main road, across the road from Metroplitan College.

The airconditioning was just switched on as we walked in. The restaurant looked immaculately clean.

We ordered a few dishes to try. This is called home style tofu (RM8) which worked out to be RM1 per piece. I like this tofu as it was crispy on the outside and definitely tasty inside out.

Chinese spinach soup (RM10) – this dish was slightly salty, but I loved the fact that it contained lard!

Beef hor fun (RM16) – mum always said ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ and this certainly applies for Kit Kee’s beef noodles. Albeit its unappealing looks, the noodles were delicious and the beef well seasoned.

Dong po rou (RM32) – every time I order this dish, I recall the story told to me about the origin of this dish, which is very popular in Hangzhou. Anyway, the meat was so easily pried into tiny bits, which is the hallmark of a good serving of dong po rou. You can see from the picture that although the meat was fat, there wasn’t much oil floating on the top.

Mantou (RM 1.50 each) – this went well with the yummy dong po rou

This is the steamed kampong chicken (RM28). I really think that the name is very apt as I like this very traditional way of steaming chicken with black fungus and golden needle mushrooms – reminds me of my grandma’s cooking!

Ginger beef (RM18 for a small portion) –the beef was tender and the spring onions and ginger gave it a potent punch of flavour.

Leafy green siew pak choy (RM8) – the generous amount of garlic used to stir fry the vegetables made them any garlic-lovers choice of vege!
