Restoran Green View, Petaling Jaya

Restoran Green View is located near, the now demolished, Rothmans roundabout in Section 19 PJ, on the road which leads to SS2. I’ve driven past this place at least a million  times throughout the years but have never summoned enough courage to walk in as I was told that food prices here are exhorbitant.

Today, I told myself that I must go, no matter what as I’ve just got my salary….well, if food turns out to be expensive then all my blogs for the next month shall be that of roadside stalls…what the heck!
There were 3 of us. We ordered orange juice & watermelon juice. Fruit juices here aren’t that expensive nor are they cheap. For RM5 each, you get a glass of freshly squeezed juice….and I ain’t complaining.
This is fresh water prawns noodles (RM78) a.k.a sang har meen .... Let me tell you about the prawns –they were of course huge and meaty. The rich and flavourful  fresh prawns were to die for and this was true of the noodles as well because the sweetness of the prawns were absorbed by the noodles. The noodles- yee mee to be exact- were crispy and crunchy when served and you need to cover them with the sauce which had some semi-cooked eggs. The outcome was something truly heavenly.


Stir fried green dragon vegetables (RM28)  – I love this vegetable as it smells and taste like chives (kuchai). I guess this is another modern day vegetable as I have never tasted it as a child.

Fried man tou (RM4) – well, the best translation of this would be fried bun. Actually Green View has 2 varieties  of buns – fried and steamed. We opted for the more delicious albeit less healthy option. I simply adore the man tou here as they are truly fragrant and yummy too.

This is steam crabs with eggs (RM77). Well, what’s a trip to Green View without trying the crabs here. In fact, before we even walked into the restaurant we saw baskets and baskets on crabs on display with prices ranging from RM80 to RM110 per kilogramme. The meaty crab steamed to perfection was such a feast!



And I am happy to say that I shan't be blogging from road side stalls for this month..at least not yet!

Pontian Noodles 笨珍云吞面 , Subang Jaya



Founded in 1948 Pontian Noodles today has a few outlets in Johor (Johor Jaya, Century Garden, Sutera Utama to name a few), Klang Valley (SS2, Subang Jaya, Sungai Wang, Sri Petaling, Kepong & Wangsa Maju)  and also Singapore. With a rather impressive list of outlets I was curious as to what drew the crowd in, and so went to find the answer myself.


I went to the outlet at SS15 Subang Jaya and was indeed delighted to note that the place has proper air-conditioning which augurs well for today’s crazy hot weather. I would however mention that the chairs aren’t the most comfortable wooden ones you will find!


We browsed through the menu and noted that choices were rather limited. We ended up ordering a fresh orange juice (RM3.80) and a bowl of gingko barley (RM4).I was happy that they obliged when I ordered orange juice without ice…and I must say they did a good job with the orange juice – tasty yet not too sweet. The gingko foo chok barley was thick and had lots of foo chow. Somehow I did not really enjoy it as it was way tooooo sweet.


The bowl on the left depicts an ‘S’ size wanton noodle in black sauce (RM4.50). It was delicious and the portion is sufficient for a light meal. The one on the right is an ‘M’ size wanton noodle in tomato sauce. (RM5.50). Both bowls of noodles came with some green vege (choy sum), fried wanton and some char siew (found the char siew to be too thinly sliced) ….and oh yeah, a bowl of soup with 2 wantons in it……which by the way, was insufficient for a wanton eater like me.

Hence we ordered a bowl of 10 wantons – RM4. These were edible but I believe the minced meat used to make these wantons have been frozen before….and I did not really like it.


We also ordered a plate of Cantonese fried kuay teow (RM5.90) – this had a generous serving of fish cake along with some prawns and squid. It tasted alright, but the kuay teow came in a huge lump making it difficult to eat.

Restoran Sri Karak, PJ New Town




If you grew up travelling along the coastal roads (yeah, there was no East-Coast Highway back then) to the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia from Kuala Lumpur and back, you would had definitely made a pit stop (defined as lunch break, snack break or toilet break) along Jalan Besar, or to be more precise at Yik Kee Restaurant, Karak.




As the years went by, the East Coast Highway was built and you no longer need to go through Karak town in order to get to the East Coast. Thank God, Yik Kee had the foresight to open several other branches. There’s one in Gohtong Jaya and also one in PJ New Town known as Sri Karak, famed for its durian products.


For those who are not familiar with PJ Old Town, look out for Ambank. Behind Ambank is RHB Bank. Sri Karak is on the same shoplots as RHB Bank and also MIB.

For old times sake, I decided to pay a visit to Sri Karak. I remember the exotic food I used to have as a child during my long journey to and fro the East Coast. A look at the menu tells me that this is a halal restaurant and any hope of eating what I used to (I was thinking of the nice pigeon soup!)  was all gone.

I ordered some food and walked over to the cake section. The aromatic cakes were very tempting and so I ordered a slice of marble cake (RM1.40) and bought a kaya swiss roll (RM9) for tomorrow’s breakfast.

Ice kacang ABC (RM5) –with a generous amount of toppings, this is a must try!



This is the Yang chow fried rice. To be frank, when this dish arrived I was shocked. “Such huge prawns and so much rice”, I thought. I tasted the fried rice and it was very delicious..and you know what? It only costs RM6.90.



Next I tried some chicken with salted fish porridge. Again, this claypot of porridge was a delightful surprise. With lots of shredded chicken, the porridge was way, way above average. For RM6.90 , it was indeed a steal!



The ostrich koay teow costs RM10. With tender pieces of ostrich and smooth textured koay teow, this noodle dish was indeed irresistible…Loved it!



This is the baby genting French beans we ordered so as to have a more balanced meal. RM12 for a huge plate of beans…and yummy ones too….excellent.



Although I did not manage to have pigeon soup that day, I left Sri Karak with a stomach filled with food and a deep sense of satisfaction….oh! AND did I say with a swiss roll in my hand too.

Beserah Seafood Restaurant

If you like having your meal with the sound of the waves as ‘background music’ and  breeze from the South China Sea blowing gently in your face, then Beserah Seafood is one place you should definitely go to.




I’ve heard many complaints that service is rather slow so I arrived early i.e at 6pm and chose the set meal for 5 which costs RM228.

This is fried tofu with some gravy. The portion looked slightly small to me.


Next we had steam kampong chicken with goji berry. The taste was alright.


Broccoli with black mushroom and some carrots. The gravy was a tad tasteless.


Nestum prawns – I love the old fashioned flower wafer but I found the prawns a little disappointing as I prefer fresh, succulent ones.


The lobster salad and steam fish were just alright.





I didn’t have a long wait for food to be served. I did find this place to be pricey, but well, perhaps you do have to fork out a little extra for ambience!

Oceanic Fortune Restaurant



Looking for something to eat we drove along Jalan Air Putih and passed by many restaurants that we have previously dined in during the course of our many visits to Cherating. We saw a ‘new’ restaurant (at least it was new to us) J and decided to give it a try.

The non air conditioned restaurant can serve a vast variety of food and this is evident from the photos displayed o both sides of the walls. Food ordering was also made easy by this visual assistance.

This is laici chicken (RM15) – chicken fillet coated in flour and deep fried. This is then stir fried with lychees , onions  and capsicum. A very flavourful dish as each piece of fillet is bursting with the sweet taste of lychees.


Squid salad (RM18) – Huge  fried ‘sotong’ rings lightly coated with mayonnaise. Perfectly made!


Curry pork (RM12) – this savoury dish not only looked good but it tasted good too.  In fact it was so tempting that even a little kid (who didn’t take spicy food) could not resist trying some.

Braised pork with man tou (RM20) – Always labelled as a sinful dish, the melt-in-the-mouth pieces of fat was awesome!


Steamed fish teow chew stlye (RM25) – with salted vegetables, tomatoes , tofu and lots of gravy –this was indeed one of the best teo chew style steamed fish I’ve come across.


Stir fried choy sum (RM10) – I love the fact that the vegetables were free of chemicals and they were slightly crunchy.

Restoran HLS Kuantan




This is a fairly new restaurant and it is apparent from the spotlessly clean walls. I love the decoration, especially the unique clock on the wall. All chairs are also covered in purple banquet chair covers with a golden yellow bow making it extremely dulcet.



I liked this clock!

These are the dishes we had:-

3 seafood combo (RM35) – cooked in a mildly sour-savoury sauce  is a combination of fish, squids and prawns. I like the sauce as it really perked me up.


Stir fried French beans (RM12) . Garnished with some anchovies, this plate was nutritiously good. French beans is said to be good for a whole load of reasons such as lowering cholesterol, improving eye sight and bones whilst anchovies are rich in potassium and selenium.


Smoked chicken – half a chicken costs RM26. Chicken bathed in flavourful smoke and cooked to perfection –that would be the best description I can give. 


Assam fish (RM45) – a fresh fish in a perfect mix of sour and spiciness- this dish truly deserves a 5-star rating.


Fish fillet cooked with ginger and spring onion (RM18). The fish was fresh and cooked over high fire thus making this dish very appealing.


Stir fried broccoli (RM18) – stir fried with black mushroom, button mushroom and carrots, I found this dish to be very luscious.

欢乐海鲜中西餐厅 Happy Together Restaurant, Kuantan




Happy Together is quite a popular air-conditioned restaurant in Kuantan. If you are anywhere near Berjaya Mega Mall it is fairly easy to find this place. Go straight all the way & you will find this located right next to Secret Recipe.

It is highly recommended that you make a reservation because business is brisk and you may be turned away as this is only a one-shop lot restaurant.

If you do not have any idea what to order, just take a look at the pictures of food displayed on both sides of the restaurant. We did just that – in fact 5 out of the 6 dishes ordered were from those.

Nestum prawns (RM60) –I can always tell when the prawns are not fresh – and I must say this prawns scored a perfect 10 in the freshness test. Well cooked, huge and fresh prawns are always a delight to savour. And I love the presentation as well…you know, with that little wafer biscuit on top…..it just made this dish so appetising.


Bean curd in claypot (RM25) – this dish had pieces of Chinese mushroom and carrots. I liked it because the bean curd was not too soggy.


Salad you zha gui (RM17) – an interesting dish with zha gui and watermelon in thousand island dressing.



Choy tam – stir fried with garlic – had sufficient wok hei and I loved it!


Broccoli, Chinese mushroom and button mushroom – the presentation was good and as many of us often judge the book by the cover, i.e go by the looks, I would say this dish tasted as good as it looked.


Honey chicken (RM28) – honey lends a sugary yet pleasant  taste to the chicken and was a hit among the kids!


What a satiating meal!
